Music Monthly - Paisley Dress

One night I was writing. I stared out the window and I saw the beautiful figure of a woman move through the street light as she walked along the sidewalk.  A long flimsy dress swayed around the curve of her body.  I wondered where she was going and then I heard her sing...
I went out walking
late last night.
Heard you were lonely,
could use a woman by your side.

Along the sidewalk
through the hollow light,
I come for you in the black of night

In the tall grass
chest to chest,
I lay on you in my paisley dress.

I went out walking
late last night.
Heard you were lonely,
could use a woman by your side

I feel your breath
against my cheek,
even though I know your heart no longer beats.

I'll kiss this stone
between our lips
love of my life 1969 - 2006

I go out walking
every night,
 heard you were lonely,
could use your woman by your side.

CODEX Radiohead - Rearrangement

Most of the muscles in our body are situated into antagonistic pairs to bring balance of movement and hold our skeleton in place. As one muscle flexes another muscle relaxes. I find the same pairing between the 'head' and the 'heart' when it comes to the labor of creative work. Music for me can start in the head and move to the heart or vice versa. Then there are the rare times it finds a balance between the two. Lately I have been fascinated with reverse engineering influential songs from other artists. Excising the emotion from the lyrics, cataloging each chord from the progression and investigating its core elements separately as a biologist would a cadaver. Then I put these songs back together with my musical faculties and my emotional core. Hopefully breathing life back into what I dismantled...

Music Monthly February - As Tears Go By

One of my most nostalgic CD's (20 years ago on cassette tape) was the Rolling Stones Hot Rocks compilation with a Matryoshka Doll looking profile of the band members heads as the cover. This compilation was what inaugurated the sounds of the "British Bad-asses" to my young ears well before I could form complete sentences. Though I love Exile on Main Street and Sticky Fingers,  my go to is Hot Rocks for the Stones...  It is one of the few band compilation disks that I think is worth a damn.

Music Monthly - Gold in Those Hills

Gold in Those Hills is a demo that I have been laboring over for the last month or so... the lyrics came from my experience of moving to California. The disillusion of a childhood dream and the realization of a new love. Ask me 5 years ago what genre of music I  write in and I would have said "rock / alt-rock" but my musical inclination have wandered toward Country and Americana.

WHAT IS A HOME CONCERT?

Home concerts are acoustic performance of our music and the story behind the songs, set in the intimacy of your home.

HOW DO I HOST A HOME CONCERT?

Host homes invite friends/family to attend an intimate performance of songs by Zach Galanis and Bridget Schack in your home. Host Homes simply need to provide us with a space to perform.

Zach's Recent Musical Obsessions

I know we are 21 days past the new year, the Grammy nominations have been announced and all the "cool kid blogs" have announced their favorite albums 2012; however, I thought that as I walk into a new season of writing songs I will divulge some of my most recent influences. Some of these albums are not just from 2012  but they have just come to my attention recently. When I find an album that moves in my soul I stay with it for months. Ask the people that drive with me around LA and they'll tell you "he needs to take that same damn CD out of his car." So with out further ramble here are my recent obsessions:

Andrew Bird - 3 White Horses

Yellow Alex - The Feelings

There are more.... Read on!

Cellar Door to be Featured on "THE NEIGHBORS" ABC

I am really excited to announce, "Cellar Door" from our album DIMES is going to be used in the new ABC TV series The Neighbors.  The song is featured in the closing scene of the episode titled "Juan of the Dead" and it airs on 12/12/12 at 8:30/7:30c

"Cellar Door" is one of my oldest songs and almost didn't make it on the DIMES album.  When we went into the studio in 2009, "Cellar Door" was not originally on the track list; however, two of the songs we had been chipping away at in the studio weren't working.  Bridget and I sat down to play "Cellar Door" for co-producer Scott Wiley and decided it was the song that made the album complete.

Progress chart in the studio recording DIMES in 2009. Cellar Door at the very bottom.

Warped Roadies

If there was ever a friend of mine born for reality TV it is Terry Lee Myers. It was only a matter of time before the voyeur eyes of commercial TV would find this 'gem' of a subject.... and they did. Tonight on FUSE 10/11C

Last summer FUSE TV followed a group of Warped Tour roadies on their 12 week tour. Terry along with Danny Bateman and Andrew Ince, childhood friends (or enemies depending on who you ask), are the main 'characters' representing the 801 (SLC, UT). Shenanigans is mostly what I can expect; however, I did get a little teary watching the opening episode when one young female journalist tells the story of how she came to the Warped Tour.

So as every good exploiter of reality does, Terry is building a catch phrase clothing line titled "My Life Vs. Your Vacation," eluding to all us lame asses sitting behind computers while Terry and the Warped tour crew live backstage rockstar lives.   Knowing Terry it will probably take off and soon enough puberty stricken boys and girls will be strutting around middle schools across the country with greasy hair, skinny jeans and "My Life Vs Your Vacation" tagged T's.

Good Luck T-Balls

Kyle Michael Neal - Hotel Cafe Dec. 6

Kyle Michael Neal, yet another one of our overly ambitious and talented musician friends gleaned from college days in Azusa CA. With all the dance music and indie-rock in LA it is quite pleasant to have a friend making music that reminds me of home (Salt Lake City, UT). If I didn't know better Kyle Neal was hanging around with Joshua James, The Devil Whale, Paul Jacobsen, Nick Neihart and John Louviere all my UT favorites.

This Thursday at HOTEL CAFE in LA, Kyle and The Far Country are releasing his debut album Morning LIght. Show starts at 8:00 and The Far Country goes on at 10pm. Click here to see more details about the show.

Robert Delong... "we know him."

Our friend Robert DeLong and the drummer for the WILD UNKNOWN has exploded into the upper echelons of music careerness and signed with GLASSNOTE records. He has been carving out a genre of his own mixing intelligent dance music with indie songwriting. Imagine the musical genius of David Bazan and Daft Punk having a child that looked like Win Butler from the Arcade Fire and played video game controllers converted into instruments... this is our friend Robert DeLong.

Before he left us to eat at the "big boys table" he left us with a re-mix of REMINDER off our last album DIMES. Check it out:

SALT LAKE, you can see him on November 9th opening for the FAINT at the IN THE VENUE

Fisherman Live - Monthly Music (September)

We have recently been asked to put on some simple live performances. So, every month in addition to releasing some new music, I will also be releasing a live video of one of our songs or a cover tune. The first of those is the song Fisherman off our last album Wild Unknown.

UPCOMING PERFORMANCES!!

The River - Music Monthly - (Instrumental)

A country orchestration I put together for the new music monthly. I am still wandering around in that same space creatively from which Wild Unknown was created. This piece has a sense of wander and mystery. I see two young friends driving a "beat to shit" chevy c-10 along country interstate road into the afternoon leaving something behind and driving into the unknown.

Late Summer Night In LA (scoring project)

An instrumental I have put together for the free music monthly. This song feels like moody LA industrial rock. The picture I chose is an older photo of our drummer Jordan Vena. This track reminds me of him... brash and sentimental. It could have been his soundtrack to leaving work at the museum in downtown LA, getting on the train and heading east.

The Buffalo Arrive (Scoring Project)

Here is the NEW MUSIC for June. This is a short film I put together for a series of web videos I was hired to do about a land project in Montana named the Yellowstone Ranch Preserve (YRP).

This first shoot was in May as spring moved in slowly the bison migrated from Yellowstone National Park to the YRP to give birth to their cavles. These animals are sort of magical in my mind. They move in massive herds of 50 to 100 early in the morning and disband during the day into smaller pockets across the buttes of the property. All of the footage I shot was with an iphone... this makes the shot half way through the video incredible.

Video From Our CD Release

Here is a video put together by Damon and Cassandra from our CD release. We started the night off strong by setting off the fire alarm with a smoke machine. Fire department had to come and shut it off... how's that for punk rock?
